Google to phase out support for IE6
Google has decided to end support for IE6 on Google Docs suite and Google Sites editor from 1st March 2010. This will be followed by Google Mail and Google calendar later in the year.
"In order to continue to improve our products and deliver more sophisticated features and performance, we are harnessing some of the latest improvements in web browser technology. This includes faster JavaScript processing and new standards like HTML5..."
Estimates suggest around 20% of web users still use Internet Explorer 6, launched in 2001, many UK government departments and some councils.
As a developer, I welcome this move. The sooner IE6 dies a natural death, the better for developerkind (I suspect for mankind in general). I only wish more apps will end support to force users to upgrade to better browsers. The IE6 No More campaign encourages users to ditch the browser.
